FAQ
What is IPL?
Intense Pulse Light (IPL) hair removal is a hair removal treatment that uses light therapy technology. Our IPL hair removal transfers light energy into heat energy to target your hair’s pigment. Using specific wavelengths, IPL removes the unwanted hair on your body.
Is an IPL Hair Removal treatment painful?
Depending on how much melanin, or pigment, you have in your skin and how dense your hair is, discomfort will vary. If your skin is categorized as darker or if you have hair that is considered dense, you may have more discomfort than those who have less melanin and less concentrated hair. However, there is no need for anesthesia during the treatment and most people report that the discomfort is minimal.
Is IPL Hair Removal for men and women?
IPL Hair removal is not just for women and is in fact a very popular and effective way for men to remove unwanted body or facial hair without having to worry about shaving rashes or getting in grown hairs. The only service exception is a brazilian.
How is IPL Hair Removal different than Laser Hair Removal?
Other laser hair removal treatments only utilize a single wavelength to rid your body of unsightly hair. However, during the IPL hair removal process, a full spectrum of wavelengths are used. Sometimes your dermatologist will use an IPL laser that has combined radio frequencies to help your skin radiate. These frequencies can help your skin’s texture, as well as help complexions that need a bit of freshening. The IPL not only has the ability to remove unwanted hair, but can also potentially beautify the skin—all at once.
Is IPL the same as Laser Hair Removal?
No, though the look of the devices and method of treatment look pretty much identical – the difference is in the actual way they work. Whilst the laser method fires a single beam of light at a specific wavelength, the IPL method flashes light of a wider range of wavelengths that penetrate the skin at different depths. The advantage of the IPL method is that as the heads on the IPL device are emitting light up to six times the size of the single laser light the treatments are typically much faster. Laser devices like those found in some salons can typically fire a more intense beam than some IPL devices and therefore may result in more permanent hair-loss in short-term.
Do I have to grow out my unwanted hair before removal?
No, you should shave before using an IPL for the first time and between all subsequent sessions. This may seem strange as you want to kill the hair but shaving allows the light energy to effectively reach the skin and penetrate down to the hair bulb / root. If that was not reason enough, the heat generated by the intense light can singe the hairs, (and we all know how bad singed hair smells), as well as damaging the product itself if not cleaned off.
